Caprock Canyons
This is one of those spots I found because I needed to find a location to settle before sunset and somewhere south of Amarillo would be nice. Maps are a Wonderfull thing. I had never even heard of Caprock or Palo Duro Canyons, yet, here I am. And since there's no BLM land in Texas, a state park will have to do. Now, I didn't know this but I was in for a surprise. That's right. Tatanka! What?! Ok, cool, how close can I get? Do they get angry, charge? Crap, I dunno anything about a buffalo (bison if you're particular). Either way, no clue. It didn't matter, the camera was already out, the abandoned google search half typed "tell me all about Biso...." forgotten. Let's just see what happens. Those exact words. They will most likely be my last at some point or another in time but not today. These buffalo watched my every move and if I went right, they went a little left and so on. However, if they happen to be walking a trail, single file like, they're not fond of you being in the way and I'm pretty sure the snorts meant something. So, you know... *click *click, I'm out.
The fun part for me. I didn't realize it until I started working the buffalo images in post production but wait, is he smiling at me? No... I'm hallucinating. I don't know but in post, I couldn't help myself but add a sort of "hey bruh" surfer voice to the one we call "Mark Buffalo"... Yeah, sorry Mark Ruffalo, we went there. It just happened, it's an inside thing and he's just dead eyeing the camera like "sup". Oh, anyway, I have too much fun sometimes. Then there's the other end of the spectrum and you think, dang, this one's wishing I'd take one step closer. And, you wouldn't think it at all, but these things can hide in this Texas brush quite easily. There's a particular shot captured when I heard the dry ground crackle and lifted the camera, which took a second to focus (so I can't see yet as I'm looking through it) and suddenly into sharp focus, I just see this eye behind the shrub trees staring back at me about five feet away. OH, hell no. It's just a little startling even though they seem fairly tame. *click *click, I'm out again.
I didn't spend much time in Caprock as it was just a stop on the quest westward. However, the park is a very clean and safe park. Texas doesn't mess around and things were top notch. It's barren as can be and you'd barely know you were there until you dropped down into the park entrance but it's a great place to stop if you're in the handle of Texas.
